Rocuronium

Caution
Paralyzing agent: causes respiratory arrest and provides no sedation or pain relief; store segregated with a "Paralyzing Agent" warning label because accidental administration is fatal without ventilation.
Storage
Refrigerate (36 to 46 F); once at room temperature use within 60 days.

Common side effects

  • Complete paralysis including breathing
  • Low blood pressure
  • Fast heartbeat

Key interactions

  • Reversed by sugammadex
  • Effect prolonged by aminoglycosides and magnesium

Counseling points

  • Used only where intubation and mechanical ventilation are immediately available
  • Provides no sedation or pain relief: the patient must be sedated separately
