Key warning

High-alert caution: a potent loop diuretic — excessive doses cause profound diuresis with water and electrolyte depletion, so dosing is individualised and electrolytes are monitored. Note current Lasix labelling carries NO boxed warning; some older generic labels still show the legacy one.

  • Frequent urination
  • Low potassium
  • Dizziness
  • Dehydration
  • Hearing changes at high doses

  • NSAIDs can blunt its effect
  • Adds to blood-pressure lowering of other drugs
  • May raise lithium levels
  • Caution with other ototoxic drugs

  • Take earlier in the day to limit nighttime urination
  • Rise slowly to reduce dizziness
  • Report muscle cramps or weakness
  • May need potassium-rich foods or supplement
  • Report ringing in the ears
