Aspirin

Caution
Reye syndrome in children and teenagers with a viral illness; GI bleeding and ulcers.
Pregnancy
Avoid full-dose aspirin in the third trimester; low-dose aspirin is used for preeclampsia prevention under supervision.

Common side effects

  • Stomach upset
  • Ulcers and gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Easy bruising
  • Ringing in the ears at high doses

Key interactions

  • Additive bleeding risk with anticoagulants and other NSAIDs
  • Ibuprofen can block its antiplatelet effect
  • Raises methotrexate levels

Counseling points

  • For a suspected heart attack, chew a plain (non-enteric) tablet
  • Take with food to reduce stomach upset
  • Do not give to children or teens with a viral illness
  • Report black stools or ringing in the ears
