- High anticholinergic burden: confusion and falls in older adults, heat stroke from reduced sweating, and worsening of narrow-angle glaucoma or urinary retention.

- Constipation
- Blurred vision
- Drowsiness
- Trouble emptying the bladder
Key interactions
- Adds to the effect of other anticholinergics (diphenhydramine, tricyclics)
- Alcohol and sedatives increase drowsiness
- May slow absorption of other oral drugs by slowing the gut
Counseling points
- Take the extended-release tablet whole: do not crush or chew
- Dry mouth is expected; sip water or use sugar-free gum
- Report inability to urinate, or eye pain and halos around lights
- Heat stroke is a risk in hot weather because you sweat less
- Report constipation that does not improve
