Citalopram

Boxed warning

Suicidal thoughts and behaviors in children, adolescents, and young adults.

Caution
Dose-dependent QT prolongation: maximum 40 mg per day, and 20 mg per day over age 60 or with interacting drugs.
Pregnancy
Use only if clearly needed; third-trimester exposure can cause neonatal adaptation symptoms.

  • Nausea
  • Drowsiness
  • Insomnia
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Dry mouth
  • QT prolongation (dose-dependent)

Key interactions

  • Serotonin syndrome risk with other serotonergic drugs
  • Avoid MAO inhibitors
  • Adds bleeding risk with NSAIDs

  • May take a few weeks to work
  • Take at the same time each day
  • Do not stop suddenly
  • Report worsening mood or suicidal thoughts
  • Limit alcohol
