PTCE or ExCPT: which pharmacy technician exam should you take?
Both exams lead to the same CPhT credential, and for most people the choice is settled by an employer or a state board rather than by preference. One content difference changes how you study: the ExCPT still tests compounding, and the PTCE stopped testing it on January 6, 2026.

Two exams dominate pharmacy technician certification in the United States, and both lead to the same three letters after your name. PTCB gives the PTCE. NHA gives the ExCPT. We've read both content outlines end to end, and we should say up front that we can't tell you which one is easier, because neither board publishes a pass rate you could compare against the other.
The choice is often not yours to make. Employers and state boards name the credential they accept, and some accept only one of the two. Check the job posting and your state board of pharmacy before you pay a registration fee, because that answer outranks every difference described below.
How the two exams are built
The formats are close enough that neither one is the obviously gentler sitting. The ExCPT gives you more questions and more time, and the PTCE gives you fewer of both.

The two scaled scores are not comparable, and converting between them means nothing. A scaled score exists so that different forms of the same exam can share one passing mark even when one form runs harder than another. NHA's candidate handbook puts its own version plainly: scores range from 200 to 500, and 390 passes any NHA exam, whichever form you happened to draw. PTCB's range runs from 1,000 to 1,600 with 1,400 as the pass, and we have written separately about how the PTCE is scored and why the raw number of correct answers behind it is not published.
What each exam covers
PTCB publishes the PTCE as four knowledge domains with a percentage against each one. NHA publishes the ExCPT as five domains with a question count against each one, and because exactly 100 questions are scored, those counts read directly as percentages.

Set side by side, the two structures disagree about what a pharmacy technician's job is made of. The ExCPT devotes 15 scored questions to the technician's role, responsibilities, and general duties, and the PTCE has no direct counterpart for that domain. The PTCE puts 35% of the exam on medications, while the ExCPT's dedicated drug domain is 13 questions. That last comparison is less lopsided than it looks, because drug knowledge also turns up inside the ExCPT's large dispensing domain, and neither board publishes the breakdown that would let us measure it.
The difference that changes how you study
Compounding is the largest content difference between the two exams. PTCB removed compounding content from the PTCE in the outline that took effect on January 6, 2026, and took alligation out of the calculations area at the same time. NHA's test plan still carries a subdomain named Sterile and Non-Sterile Products, Compounding, Unit Dose, and Repackaging, worth 10 of its 100 scored questions.
The dates explain the gap without either board being wrong about its own exam. NHA's test plan is based on a job analysis completed in 2023. PTCB's outline took effect in January 2026 and reflects a later study of the same profession. Math
NHA names calculations as its own subdomain and puts 7 scored questions on it. PTCB publishes no equivalent figure, because its percentages describe knowledge domains rather than individual topics, so we can't tell you how many PTCE questions involve arithmetic. Who can sit each exam
PTCB publishes two pathways: completion of a PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program, which you may be within 60 days of finishing when you apply, or equivalent work experience as a pharmacy technician totaling at least 500 hours. NHA also publishes two. Both of them open with a high school diploma or its equivalent, which PTCB's published pathways do not require, and both of them put a recency window on whatever qualifies you, which PTCB's work-experience route does not.
- NHA pathway one: a high school diploma or GED, or one scheduled to be earned in the next 60 days, plus a pharmacy technician training or education program completed within the last 5 years
- NHA pathway two: a high school diploma or GED, plus 1 year of work experience including at least 1,200 hours of supervised pharmacy-related work within the last 3 years
What we couldn't pin down
NHA does not publish the ExCPT fee on its certification page, and you see the amount when you select a date and location. PTCB publishes $129 covering the application and the exam together. Neither board publishes a pass rate broken out in a way that would let you compare the difficulty of one exam against the other, so a ranking of the two by difficulty would have no published data behind it. We also have not surveyed all fifty state boards of pharmacy on which credential they accept, so your own board stays the authority on that question.
If both exams are open to you and nothing external settles it, the deciding factor is usually the study material rather than the exam.
